The stats are out and they’re better than last year. 4% of children’s books published in 2018 had a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic main character. This is a 3% increase from last year, but as 33% of our schoolchildren are of BAME origins, there’s still a long way to go.

The stats are bad, we know it, but they are going in the right direction. So what can we, (all of us, collectively) do to help?

Increase Demand

Check your children’s bookshelves, can you find stories that smash gender and disability stereotypes? Are there books where people of colour are the main characters, can you see any stories that feature gay parents, single parents, blended families?

Don’t worry if not, we are here to help.

Because we want to see inclusive and representative children’s books on everybody’s shelves and want more people to buy them, encouraging more to be made,
we are going to give you £20 OFF a full ‘Everybody In’ Box. That’s TWENTY amazing inclusive titles that will inject diversity into any bookshelf, for just £79.99 (plus a bit of postage). You just need to use discount code EVERYBODYIN at checkout.

Representation is crucial. If kids don’t see themselves in books, they don’t see all the possibilities there are for their lives and their aspirations shrink. Meanwhile, the over represented kids are gifted disproportionate ideas about their own importance. Nobody needs that.
