With school disrupted and lots of things out of the ordinary for loads of children, this book is perfect for reminding them about school life. It’s great for children making the jump from nursery to big school but also for children who are thinking of a return in September.

Sometimes things go wrong

There are lots of opportunities for things to go wrong for dragon. And the book gently acknowledges all the times throughout the day it might do exactly that.

Role modelling

But dragon, despite expectations based on her appearance, handles the goodbye to her parent, does lovely painting, shares with her friends, plays nicely. All the things our dream children do all the time. (Definitely not mine). The book is really good for role modelling what’s going to be expected at school but also an opportunity to discuss the kind of things that they might struggle with and what that will mean for them.

While reading we had a lot of discussion and did a lot of reassurance about dragon’s perfect day, pointing out that it was perfectly possibly, as shown by the book, for dragon to have a totally different kind of day. We all have them. We aim for everything to go well but things get in the way – other children, emotions, something going wrong. That’s all normal.

Getting prepared

With this kind of preparation parents and children can feel a lot more equipped for the new school year.

The school day ends in the best way, in the book corner, with all three children sharing stories.

Another beautiful story from Caryl Hart and Rosalind Beardshaw, perfect for bringing some calm into these weird times. We have been putting them in our school boxes, knowing September is going to bring some challenges for children and teachers. We know this is going to be a really wonderul and useful addition to those school libraries.
