Muslim characters in stories.

Eid Mubarak to all those celebrating as the month of Ramadan draws to a close. We hope it’s been a beautiful time of refreshment and reflection for you and your families

At Little Box of Books we’re committed to finding books that show the diversity of our population. We are delighted to be able to highlight some  books that introduce all children to some brilliant Muslim families and characters.

We present normal families and situations to children through the books we choose. We steer children away from stereotypes, keeping their minds wide open, teaching them through story after story that they and everybody else are never defined by a label or one characteristic. We are all individials made up of a jumble of characteristics that make us all unique.

TV and the media are responsible for negative narratives peddlied about Muslim families and Muslim characters, so much so, the Riz test has been created. Prompted by a speech by Riz Ahmed in 2017, the Riz Test is five criteria to measure how Muslims are portrayed on Film and TV.

We want to introduce children to Muslim characters so they’re not impacted by these reductive narratives.

So without further ado, here are our top recommendations for brilliant children’s books that feature Muslim characters, that will prompt conversation and help more children to see themselves in the books they read.

You can buy these beauties individually from here  OR we can put together a bundle for you and get them to your home or school.  Just email us on [email protected] . We exist to diversify bookshelves and want all children to have access to stories that reflect the diversity of our population. Get in touch if you need more information!
