My Hair is a beautifully written book about a little girl who is trying to find the perfect hairstyle for her birthday. It is a wonderful celebration of black hair and talks the reader through lots of different hairstyles. For younger children, the rhymes make it accessible and readable. And for older children it is a beautiful reminder to celebrate the characteristics that make them who they are. It teaches black children to love their hair by putting it centre stage. This brilliant book could give white and brown children an insight into black culture and celebrates the versatility and beauty of afro hair.

This story really evokes memories for me, of going to the hairdressers as a child. I love that the story busts some of those hair gender stereotypes. Showing the sister getting her high top fade and the short crop her Auntie goes for.

Overall, this story is telling young readers to accept their natural hair, no matter the style and I love it.
