We create diverse bookshelves and have been for four years this week! Happy Birthday to us…
And what better way to celebrate than at an awards ceremony.
On Wednesday, the team at Little Box of Books headed over to Lancaster House for the Kickstart Awards. Out of 168,000 Kickstart Interns, Daneisha, who started with us a year past May, was up for the award of ‘Significant Contribution’.
The Kickstart Scheme
The Kickstart scheme was set up by the government in response to the pandemic in a bid to get more young people into work. Implemented by the Department of Work and Pensions, the scheme offered 16-24 year olds who weren’t accessing employment or training and were recipients of universal credit, fully paid internships with businesses all over the UK. Each fully funded placement lasted 6 months. It was designed to give young people new experience, opportunities and the chance of long lasting employment.
We were lucky to get Daneisha, she hadn’t been out of work for very long and was turning 25 a few months into the programme. She has been business transforming, arriving in May 2021 and quickly got to know everything about the business. Finding out how everything worked meant she could suggest efficiencies and better ways of working, creating systems that have made our book buying and logistics smooth. She can recognise any children’s book by the colour of the cover and she knows who’s published them all. And she is passionate about her 5 year opld daughter loving reading and seeing herself in stories.
The Kickstart Awards
When I, (Lynsey) got into bookselling 4 years ago, I knew nothing, except how much I loved books. And how much I wanted kids to read from diverse bookshelves. But we have moved from the Kitchen table and are now a multi-award winning business.
Becausse she WON, in a ridiculous room made of gold, in an event attended by the Prime Minister.
We couldn’t be prouder, except for when she tried to opt out of the prizewinning photo with Boris Johnson.
The Kickstart Scheme has been a huge success for us as a business. It fits right in our remit of hiring diversely. And we have been able to make more of a difference over the past year. Hiring 6 people who were looking for work, supporting them to gain new skills and giving them valuable experience.
